Professor Tony Elliott is an Independent Consultant Psychiatrist and the Director of the UK Centre for Medico-Legal Studies. He was Clinical Director of the NHS Midlands Partnership Foundation Trust from 1996 to 2020, for which he received an NHS Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatry and a Member of the Faculty of Forensic Psychiatry.

Medico-Legal Expertise

Professor Elliott has wide-ranging experience in preparing medico-legal reports and giving evidence in court as an Expert Witness.

His particular areas of interest are mental disorders arising from personal injury, including but not limited to PTSD, factitious disorders, work-induced or stress-related psychological disability, and depression. He has also provided assessments for cases of negligence arising from direct clinical care or from other psychological reactions.

His Expert Witness work has involved providing pre-sentencing reports, mental capacity assessments, parental assessments for Family Court, reports on sexual offences, assessments of fitness to plead, and more.

Professor Elliott has given evidence in Magistrates, County, Family, Crown and High Courts in Shrewsbury, Oswestry, Mold, Telford, Birmingham, Liverpool, Nottingham, Newcastle, and London.

Over the last two years, Professor Elliott has provided, on average, 100 medico-legal reports per year, including 15-20 medical negligence cases and 80 civil cases.
